My dissertation addresses the relationship between Buddhist doctrine and Buddhist tantra through a close reading and analysis of the works of several authors belonging to a prominent school of medieval Indian Buddhist tantric exegesis: the Ārya School of the Guhyasamājatantra (GST). By examining the particular viewpoints and assumptions of these authors, I analyze how they conceived of the role of tantric practice within the larger framework of Buddhist soteriology. I pose the question: why did these authors think that Buddhists should practice tantra, and why did they hold that tantric practice would lead to Buddhist enlightenment?
