Bengali

Bengali is the language of Bangladesh and the Indian States of West Bengal, Tripura, and Southern Assam. With about 250 million total speakers, Bengali is one of the most widely spoken languages, and is ranked seventh in the world. Bengali literature spans over one thousand years and reached its pinnacle in 1913 when Rabindranath Tagore won the Nobel Prize for literature.

The Department of South Asian Studies' Language Tutorials are courses accomodating individualized study of a South Asian language. With an emphasis on written expression, reading comprehension, and oral fluency, languages in the tutorial program are offered when there is demonstrated curricular or academic need on the part of the student, and when suitable instruction can be arranged.
