Please join us for a seminar co-hosted by the Saxena Center at Brown University, the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University, and the Mittal Institute at Harvard University.

The talk will be about the relationship between local elected officials (such as the Gram Pradhans, or Village Council Presidents) and elected officials at the state level (Members of the Legislative Assembly or MLA). The paper — which is part of a broader study of party building incentives in India — looks for a potential relationship between the assignment of reservation status for village councils and the partisan identity of MLAs. Because local level elections in UP are officially non—partisan, the paper uses the reservation status of village councils as a (imperfect) proxy for the partisan identity of Gram Pradhans.

The speaker for this event will be Thibaud Marcesse, Assistant Professor of Comparative and South Asian Politics at Boston College.
