Dr. Swarnavel Eswaran, Michigan State University
Drawing from his recent fiction and nonfiction works, Writer/Director Swarnavel Eswaran will discuss the centrality of neytal to his documentary Nagapattinam: Waves from the Deep and fiction feature Kattumaram and marutam to his work in progress, Thangam (2025). If neytal/sea and seaward spaces signify longing, separation, and mourning, marutam /plains are linked to domesticity and conflict, while the adjacent mountains in Thangam (Western Ghats)/kuriñci evoke love and union.
